May
is here. The third and last
month of Spring, thought to be named
after the Greek Goddess Maia, and where
the weather (hopefully) starts to take a turn for the better! It is also
National Share-a-story Month, an annual celebration of the power of storytelling and story
sharing, providing a fantastic opportunity to
bring children and stories together.
The theme for this year is ‘Picture a Story’, celebrating the
power of illustrations for all ages and encouraging the sharing
of picture books. At Torfaen Libraries, we have a wide range of picture
books for our younger readers containing the inspiring artwork
of illustrators such as Axel Scheffler, Emily Gravett and Tony Ross. We also have a
growing collection of graphic novels for our teenage and adult members.
If
you have a little one at home, why not cuddle up on a chair or rug and
share one of these
books when you're next in your local library?
The
Everywhere Bear by Julia
Donaldson and Rebecca
Cobb - The
Everywhere Bear has a wonderful time with the children in Class One, but one
day he gets more than he bargained for when he falls unnoticed from a backpack
and embarks on his own big adventure! If you enjoy this one it's also
worth checking out The
Paper Dolls too!
We're
Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael
Rosen and
Helen Oxenbury - Follow
and join in the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash
through the river and squelch through the mud in search of a bear. What a
surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the forest! A
classic story that demands to be shared.
There's a Pig up my Nose! By John Dougherty and Laura Hughes - This delightfully silly tale, brought to life by warm, comical artwork from rising star Laura Hughes, will have children giggling and oinking out loud to try to work out how to get a farmyard animal out of someone's nose.
Triangle - Multi-award-winning,
bestselling duo Mac
Barnett and Jon
Klassen conspire
again on a slyly funny tale about some very sneaky shapes.
The
Pest in the Nest - From
novelist and playwright Julian
Gough, and the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Jim
Field, comes a brilliantly funny story of a rabbit
and bear who discover that things are always better when they're shared with a
friend.
