Stop Press, children do read!

They say kids don’t read anymore. Well I’m glad to say the stats give the lie to this. 13 of the top 20 most borrowed authors from public libraries in 2015/2016 according to Public Lending Right stats, were children’s authors. 2 were in the top 3, Julia Donaldson and Daisy Meadows and 7 in the top 10, including Roderick Hunt, Francesca Simon and Roald Dahl.

The top 10 book sales chart has an amazing 9 children’s books, with David Walliams’ ‘Blob’ at number 1. Admittedly, these were all World Book Day books sold at the knock down price of £1 or free with a World Book Day voucher, but what a great way of getting brilliant authors into children’s hands.

Maen nhw’n dweud nad yw plant yn darllen y dyddiau hyn. Ond mae’r ystadegau yn dweud yn wahanol. Roedd 13 o’r 20 awdur a fenthycwyd amlaf o lyfrgelloedd cyhoeddus yn 2015/2016, yn ôl ystadegau Hawliau Benthyg Cyhoeddus, yn awduron plant. Roedd 2 yn y 3 uchaf, sef Julia Donaldson a Daisy Meadows a 7 yn y 10 uchaf, gan gynnwys Roderick Hunt, Francesca Simon a Roald Dahl.

Mae gan siart gwerthu llyfrau’r 10 uchaf 9 o lyfrau plant arno, gyda ‘Blob’ David Walliams yn dod yn gyntaf. Gwir, roedd y rhain i gyd yn llyfrau Diwrnod y Llyfr yn cael eu gwerthu am bris rhad o £1 neu am ddim gyda thocyn Diwrnod y Llyfr, ond dyma ffordd wych o gael awduron rhagorol i ddwylo plant.
