Exciting News from Philip Pullman

Happy days! Philip Pullman has announced that he is returning to the world of Lyra and daemons, witches and armoured polar bears with a new trilogy, ‘The Book of Dust’. I first fell in love with this wonderful parallel universe over 20 years ago when Northern Lights, the first installment of the wonderful ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy was published in 1995. Ostensibly a children’s / young adult series it could be enjoyed on many levels and was widely read by adults, myself included.

Set 10 years before ‘Northern Lights’, Pullman describes ‘The Book of Dust’ as neither a prequel nor a sequel but an ‘equel’ that stands beside ‘His Dark Materials’ and tells a different story.

Lyra returns as the central character but with a new character as the hero. Pullman says that readers of the first series will recognise lots of other characters and elements in the new books.

My excitement about the new series is tinged with sadness though. My dear friend and former colleague Ollie Chappell passed away in January this year and will not get to enjoy the new series. She was a huge fan and champion of ‘His Dark Materials’ and introduced me to it along with many customers both young and old at Pontypool Library.

The first book in the new series is scheduled for publication in October 2017, title still to be announced. ‘The Book of Dust’ trilogy stands alone so you don’t need to read ‘His Dark Materials’ first but why not read or re-read the original series and submerge yourself in Lyra’s world in anticipation of the new book?

More exciting news, the BBC are airing an adaptation of ‘His Dark Materials’, but we’ll have to wait until 2018 for that.

Fe wnes syrthio mewn cariad â'r bydysawd cyfochrog rhyfeddol hwn dros 20 mlynedd yn ôl pan gyhoeddwyd Northern Lights, y cyntaf o'i drioleg hyfryd 'His Dark Materials' ym 1995. Ymddengys mai cyfres i blant/oedolion ifanc ydyw, y gellir ei fwynhau ar sawl lefel ond a ddarllenwyd yn eang gan oedolion, gan gynnwys fi.
