Talking Slippers at Torfaen Libraries!

Did you know that a third of people over the age of 65 will fall each year? Most falls take place at home, and many are caused by worn-out or poorly fitted slippers.

Torfaen libraries have recently received funding from the Carnegie UK Trust and the Wellcome Trust to hold a community festival in the months leading up to Christmas/the Mid-Winter which will bring young and old together and raise awareness of falls prevention and independent living.

To help us, we’ll be on the lookout for children and young people who can nominate older people to receive slippers to help keep them safe.  Older people can also help by telling us about a young person under 16 who has been kind to them.

We’d love to hear from as many people as we can! The older person will be included in our draw for one of 250 FREE, SAFE pairs of slippers, with the young person receiving a Christmas card from us along with a voucher for 5 free DVD loans from the library.

Both groups will be invited to tea parties in one of our libraries where there will be storytelling suitable for all ages, refreshments and a chance to share experiences and enjoy each other’s company.

If you know of a younger or older person that you’d like to nominate, pop into your local Torfaen library to pick up a form today!

Oeddech chi’n gwybod bod dros un o bob tri o bobl dros 65 oed yn cwympo bob blwyddyn? Mae’r rhan fwyaf o’r digwyddiadau yma yn y cartref, ac mae nifer yn cael eu hachosi gan hen sliperi neu rhai sydd ddim yn ffitio.

Mae Llyfrgelloedd Torfaen wedi cael arian oddi wrth Ymddiriedolaeth Carnegie UK  ac Ymddiriedolaeth Wellcome i gynnal gŵyl gymunedol yn y misoedd yn arwain i fyny at y Nadolig/Canol y Gaeaf a fydd yn dod â’r ifanc a’r hen ynghyd i godi ymwybyddiaeth o sut i atal cwympiadau ac o fyw’n annibynnol.

I’n helpu, byddwn yn edrych am blant a phobl ifanc a all enwebu pobl hŷn i dderbyn sliperi i’w helpu i gadw’n ddiogel. Gall bobl hŷn helpu hefyd trwy ddweud wrthym ni am berson ifanc dan 16 oed sydd wedi bod yn garedig wrthyn nhw.

The SLA Information Book Award 2017

Earlier this year the School Library Association announced the shortlist for the 7th annual SLA Information Book Award.  The award is designed to support junior and school libraries and to reinforce the importance of non-fiction whilst highlighting the high standard of titles available.

The winners are being announced later this month but let’s have a look at some of the titles shortlisted for their age range:

Under 7

A First Book of Animals by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Petr Horacek

Nicola Davies is a passionate advocate of the natural world and delights in introducing children to all its glories. Over fifty different animals, birds, insects and marine creatures are brought vividly to life through her words and the accompanying illustrations.

The Big Book of Bugs by Yuval Zommer

This engaging large format picture book is ideal for just dipping into or reading from cover to cover. More than an information book, it challenges the reader to spot the hidden fly fifteen times, while searching for other bugs along the way.

7-12

Hello World by Jonathan Litton, illustrated by L’Atelier Cartographik

Make friendships across the world by learning basic greetings in around 150 languages from Moroccan Arabic to Ukranian and many others too.  Lifting the language flap reveals transliterations and interesting details; captions highlight information about aspects of life and history and simple maps show basic geographical information.

Ada’s Ideas: The Story of Ada Lovelace, the World’s First Computer Programmer by Fiona Robinson

This is an inspirational story of female achievement which also highlights the importance of the imagination when it comes to scientific invention. Published two years after the 200th anniversary of the mathematician’s birth, this beautifully designed picture-book biography introduces the reader to Ada’s world and her pioneering work with Charles Babbage.

12+

Mind Your Head by Juno Dawson and Dr Olivia Hewitt, illustrated by Gemma Correll

Straightforward advice mixed with a healthy dose of humour make this an excellent book that all teenagers would do well to read. It approaches mental health issues and sources of help in a sensible, non-sensational way with plenty of detail.

Who are Refugees and Migrants? What makes people leave their homes? And other big questions by Michael Rosen and Annnemarie Young

Equipped with all the organisational features of a traditional information book, this also has a distinctive authorial voice which makes it highly readable. This timely book is designed to explain and inform, but also to challenge preconceptions and encourage the reader to develop their own opinions.

Yn gynharach eleni cyhoeddodd Cymdeithas Llyfrgelloedd Ysgol y rhestr fer ar gyfer y 7fed Gwobr Lyfrau Gwybodaeth flynyddol.  Nod y wobr yw cefnogi llyfrgelloedd mewn ysgolion cynradd ac uwchradd ac i ategu pwysigrwydd llyfrau ffeithiol a phwysleisio safon uchel y llyfrau sydd ar gael.

Bydd yr enillwyr yn cael eu cyhoeddi yn ddiweddarach y mis yma ond gadewch i ni edrych ar rai o’r llyfrau sydd ar y rhestr fer ar gyfer yr ystod oedran:

Gold Dagger (Best Crime Novel of the Year)
Jane Harper – The Dry
Amid the worst drought to ravage Australia in a century, it hasn't rained in small country town Kiewarra for two years, tensions in the community become unbearable when three members of the Hadler family are brutally murdered. Everyone thinks Luke Hadler, who committed suicide after slaughtering his wife and six-year-old son, is guilty. Policeman Aaron Falk returns to the town of his youth for the funeral of his childhood best friend, and is unwillingly drawn into the investigation. As questions mount and suspicion spreads through the town, Falk is forced to confront the community that rejected him 20 years earlier.

Ian Fleming Steel Dagger (Best Thriller)
Mick Herron – Spook Street
20 years retired, David Cartwright can still spot when the stoats are on his trail. Radioactive secrets and unfinished business go with the territory on Spook Street: he's always known there would be an accounting. And he's not as defenceless as they might think. Jackson Lamb worked with Cartwright back in the day. He knows better than most that this is no vulnerable old man.

John Creasy New Blood Dagger (Best Crime Novel by a Debut Author)
Chris Whitaker – Tall Oaks
When three-year-old Harry Monroe goes missing, Tall Oaks is the sort of community you'd expect to rally round and find him before the day is out. Someone must know something. But months later his desperate mother Jess is an increasingly isolated figure, still printing off posters of her son and putting them on display around the town with the police investigation apparently at a standstill. And it's becoming quite clear that however well they all think they know each other, there are secrets tucked away that no one wants to see the light of day.

Endeavour Historical Dagger     (Best Historical Crime Novel)
Abir Mukherjee – A Rising Man
India, 1919. Captain Sam Wyndham, former Scotland Yard detective, is a new arrival to Calcutta. Desperately seeking a fresh start after his experiences during the Great War, Wyndham has been recruited to head up a new post in the police force. But with barely a moment to acclimatise to his new life or to deal with the ghosts which still haunt him, Wyndham is caught up in a murder investigation that will take him into the dark underbelly of the British Raj. A senior official has been murdered, and a note left in his mouth warns the British to quit India - or else.

Dagr Aur (Nofel Drosedd Orau’r Flwyddyn)
Jane Harper – The Dry
Yng nghanol y sychdwr gwaethaf i effeithio Awstralia mewn canrif, nid yw wedi glawio yn nhref fechan wledig Kiewarra am ddwy flynedd. Mae’r tensiwn yn y gymuned yn mynd yn annioddefol pan fydd tri aelod o’r teulu Hadler yn cael eu lladd. Mae pawb yn meddwl bod Luke Hadler, a laddodd ei hun ar ôl llofruddio ei wraig a’i fab chwech oed, yn euog. Mae’r plismon Aaron Falk yn dychwelyd i dref ei ieuenctid ar gyfer angladd ei ffrind gorau, ac yn cael ei dynnu i mewn i’r ymchwiliad, yn erbyn ei ewyllys. Wrth i’r cwestiynau a’r amheuon lifo drwy’r dref, mae Falk yn cael ei orfodi i wynebu’r gymuned a’i wrthododd ugain mlynedd ynghynt.

Dagr Ddur Ian Fleming (Nofel Gyffro Orau)
Mick Herron – Spook Street
Wedi ymddeol am 20 mlynedd, mae David Cartwright yn dal i fedru gweld pan fydd y carlymod ar ei ôl. Mae cyfrinachau ymbelydrol a phethau anorffenedig yn rhan annatod o Spook Street: mae wastad wedi gwybod y bydd yn rhaid wynebu pethau. Ac nid yw mor ddi-amddiffyn ag y maent yn ei feddwl. Gweithiodd Jackson Lamb gyda Cartwright yn y gorffennol. Mae ef yn gwybod yn well na llawer nad hen ddyn diymadferth yw hwn.

Dagr Gwaed Newydd John Creasy (Nofel Drosedd Orau gan Awdur Newydd)
Chris Whitaker – Tall Oaks
Pan fydd Harry Monroe, sy'n dair oed, yn mynd ar goll, byddech yn disgwyl i gymuned fel Tall Oaks fod yn gefn a cheisio dod o hyd iddo cyn diwedd dydd. Rhaid bod rhywun yn gwybod rhywbeth. Ond fisoedd yn ddiweddarach, mae Jess, ei fam druan, yn ffigwr fwyfwy anghysbell, sydd wrthi’n argraffu posteri o'i mab a'u harddangos o gwmpas y dref tra bod ymchwiliad yr heddlu yn sefyll yn ei unfan. Mae'n dod yn eithaf clir, fodd bynnag, waeth pa mor dda y maen nhw'n meddwl eu bod yn adnabod ei gilydd, mae 'na gyfrinachau nad oes neb eisiau eu datgelu.

Dagr Hanesyddol Endeavour (Nofel Drosedd Hanesyddol Orau)
Abir Mukherjee – A Rising Man

Ond heb amser i ddod i arfer â’i fywyd newydd neu i ddelio â’r ysbrydion sy’n dal i aflonyddu arno, mae Wyndham yng nghanol ymchwiliad i lofruddiad a fydd yn mynd ag o i grombil tywyll yr Oruchwyliaeth Brydeinig. Mae uwch swyddog wedi ei lofruddio, ac mae nodyn yn ei geg yn rhybuddio Prydain i adael India - neu...

Desert Island Books 8

After a few months absence we’re returning to our Desert Island Books feature. Our latest castaway is Norah Williams, Health & Wellbeing Information and Support Officer based at Cwmbran Library.

Michael Connolly - Harry Bosch

My favourite genre is American crime thrillers and Michael Connolly is now my go to guy.  I’d been aware of him for many years but never got around to reading his books. Then I stumbled across ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ and discovered the character Micky Haller – I was hooked on this series.  His half-brother, Harry Bosch, kept cropping up in some plot lines and this piqued my interest in him.  I always like to get the full story so went right back to the very first book and then ensured the next was on order, then the next and then the next….. It took me a little while to get up to date but now I eagerly await his next case.

Colin McLaren – JFK The Smoking Gun
I love reading non-fiction. I’m also a fan of the conspiracy theory and the greatest of the 20th century is who shot JFK?  McLaren’s theory totally debunks the myth and legend that has shrouded this case for over 50 years.  McLaren is a retired Australian detective with an impressive ‘catch record’.  He approached the shooting as a cold case by reading every single document, report (including the Warren Commission), theory and witness statement.  For four years he used his considerable expertise to uncover what was in plain sight all the time.  A thoroughly well researched and written piece of work.  Read it and then try to uphold the myth – I couldn’t.

Joanne Harris - Chocolat
Who doesn’t like Chocolate?  This is something I know I would miss, but I also know it would be impractical to take it with me.  Instead I would take along this tale to compensate.
It’s the tale of the effect a stranger has on a conservative French village.  Vianne Rocher breezes in at the beginning of Lent and opens a chocolatière on the main square opposite the Church.  She is a single mother with a 6 year old daughter.  During the traditional season of fasting and self-denial, she gently changes the lives of the villagers who visit her with a combination of sympathy, subversion and a little magic. The village priest and his supporters are scandalised.  Tensions run high as Easter approaches - the ritual of the church versus the indulgence of chocolate makes a showdown between Father Reynaud and Vianne inevitable.

D L Smith - The Miracles of Santa Fico
Another story set in Europe.
A charming comedy of errors played out in the Tuscan sun.  There’s love, sex, death, crises, catastrophes, natural disasters, manmade disasters, human foolishness, heavenly interventions, epiphanies and wonderful Tuscan food, mouth-wateringly described. When Leo Pizzola inherits the family farm, he returns from Chicago to his hometown of Santo Fico in Tuscany to make his fortune and find one woman, his first love Marta Fortino - she married someone else and is now a widow.  The town is dying, even the beautiful fountain in the centre of Santo Fico has mysteriously dried up.  A miracle is needed.
The novel reminds me of moments in my life when, with the advantage of hindsight, I can see how adverse events inexplicably became avenues of good fortune.

Antoine Laurain  -The President's Hat
The French have form when it comes to giving inanimate objects inner life. It all starts when the President of France leaves his hat behind at a restaurant.  The hat is lost and found several times. It conveys a sense of confidence and authority to each new finder.  It is a device that nicely links a collection of tales, allowing us to observe the changes it brings to the lives of those who lose and find it. A light-hearted and quirky read easily digested in one sitting.

Dylan Thomas – Under Milk Wood
I’ve just noticed that so far all my choices are set in foreign climes.  I’m proud of being Welsh, my only shame is I don’t speak the language. So for my final choice I would take this along because of its Welshness with a capital W.  Dylan Thomas at his best; wonderful characters, quirky picture-painting language, a modern Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales - all of life is here and its WELSH.

8 Llyfr yr Ynys Bellennig

Ar ôl ychydig fisoedd o absenoldeb, rydym yn dychwelyd at ein herthygl Llyfrau’r Ynys Bellennig. Y diweddaraf i’w gadael ar yr ynys yw Norah Williams, Swyddog Gwybodaeth a Chymorth Iechyd a Lles yn Llyfrgell Cwmbrân.

Michael Connolly - Harry Bosch

Fy hoff genre yw nofelau cyffro Americanaidd ac mae
Michael Connolly yn rhywun rwy’n dychwelyd ato dro ar ôl tro. Rwy’n gwybod amdano ers blynyddoedd lawer ond erioed wedi darllen ei lyfrau. Yna, mi welais ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ a darganfod y cymeriad Micky Haller - roeddwn wrth fy modd gyda’r gyfres. Roedd ei hanner brawd, Harry Bosch, yn ymddangos mewn ambell le gan brocio fy niddordeb. Rwy’n hoffi cael y stori lawn ac felly mi es yn ôl i’r llyfr cyntaf un ac yna sicrhau bod y nesaf wedi ei archebu, ac yna’r nesa’ a’r nesa’ ... Cymerodd ychydig o amser ond rwyf wedi dal i fyny nawr, a bellach yn aros am y bennod nesaf.

Colin McLaren – JFK The Smoking Gun
Rwyf wrth fy modd yn darllen llyfrau ffeithiol. Rwyf hefyd yn
ffan o’r theori cynllwynio, a’r fwyaf yn yr 20fed ganrif yw pwy saethodd JFK?  Mae damcaniaeth McLaren yn dryllio’r chwedlau sydd wedi cysgodi’r achos hwn am fwy na 50 o flynyddoedd. Mae McLaren yn dditectif wedi ymddeol yn Awstralia gydag enw da iawn o ran datrys achosion. Edrychodd ar y saethu fel ‘achos oer’ trwy ddarllen pob dogfen, adroddiad (gan gynnwys un Comisiwn Warren), damcaniaeth a datganiad tyst. Am bedair blynedd defnyddiodd ei wybodaeth arbenigol sylweddol i ddatguddio’r hyn oedd yn amlwg trwy’r amser. Gwaith wedi ei ymchwilio’n drwyadl ac wedi ei ysgrifennu’n dda. Darllenwch hwn ac yna ceisio cynnal y myth – fedrwn i ddim.

Joanne Harris - Chocolat
Pwy nad yw’n hoffi siocled? Mae hyn yn rhywbeth y gwn y
buaswn yn ei golli ond byddai’n anymarferol mynd â pheth gyda mi. Yn hytrach, mi fuaswn yn mynd â’r llyfr yma yn ei le.
Hanes yr effaith y mae dieithryn yn ei chael ar bentref ceidwadol yn Ffrainc ydyw. Mae  Vianne Rocher yn cyrraedd y pentref ar ddechrau’r Grawys ac yn agor siop siocled ar y prif sgwâr, gyferbyn â’r eglwys. Mae’n fam sengl gyda merch 6 oed. Yn ystod y cyfnod traddodiadol o ymprydio a hunan-wâd, mae’n araf yn newid bywydau’r pentrefwyr sy’n dod i’w gweld gyda chyfuniad o  gydymdeimlo, tanseilio ac ychydig o hud a lledrith. Mae offeiriad y pentref a’i gefnogwyr yn gwaredu ati. Mae’r tensiwn yn uchel wrth i’r Pasg ddynesu - mae defodau’r eglwys yn erbyn pleserau siocled yn golygu bod gwrthdrawiad rhwng y Tad Reynaud a Vianne yn anochel.

D L Smith - The Miracles of Santa Fico
Stori arall wedi ei lleoli yn Ewrop.
Comedi swynol yn digwydd dan haul Twsgani. Mae cariad, marwolaeth, argyfyngau, trychinebau naturiol, trychinebau dynol, ffolineb dynol, ymyraethau nefol, epiffani a bwyd hyfryd Twsgani, y cwbl wedi ei ddisgrifio’n wych. Pan fo Leo Pizzola yn etifeddu fferm y teulu, mae’n dychwelyd o Chicago i dref ei enedigaeth yn Santo Fico yn Nhwsgani i wneud ei ffortiwn a chael hyd i fenyw, ei gariad cyntaf, Marta Fortino - priododd hi rywun arall ac mae bellach yn wraig weddw. Mae’r dref yn marw; mae hyd yn oed y ffynnon hyfryd yng nghanol Santo Fico wedi mynd yn sych. Mae angen gwyrth.
Mae’r nofel yn f’atgoffa o adegau yn fy mywyd pan, wrth edrych yn ôl, medraf weld sut mae digwyddiadau andwyol yn troi’n ffortiwn dda.

Antoine Laurain  -The President's Hat
Mae’r Ffrancwyr yn enwog am greu bywyd mewnol ar gyfer
pethau difywyd. Mae’r cyfan yn dechrau pan fo Arlywydd Ffrainc yn gadael ei het mewn gwesty. Caiff yr het ei cholli a’i chanfod nifer o weithiau. Mae’n rhoi teimlad o hyder ac awdurdod i bob un sy’n cael hyd iddi. Mae’n ddyfais sy’n cysylltu casgliad o straeon yn braf, gan ganiatáu i ni weld y newidiadau a ddaw i fywydau’r rhai sy’n colli a chael hyd i’r het. Llyfr bach ysgafn a hynod sy’n hawdd ei ddarllen mewn un eisteddiad.

Dylan Thomas – Under Milk Wood
Rwyf newydd sylweddoli bod fy newisiadau oll wedi eu lleoli
mewn gwledydd tramor. Rwy’n falch o fod yn Gymraes; fy unig gywilydd yw nad wyf yn siarad yr iaith. Felly, ar gyfer fy newis olaf, hoffwn fynd â hwn oherwydd ei Gymreictod. Dylan Thomas ar ei orau: cymeriadau gwych, iaith sy’n peintio lluniau, Straeon Caergaint Chaucer modern – mae bywyd oll yma ac mae’n fywyd CYMREIG.
