Great books gracing our TV screens this autumn

Do you, like me, love a classic period drama? Well I hope we’re in for a treat this autumn when “Vanity Fair” hits our TV screens on Sunday 2 September at 9pm on ITV.

Set during the Napoleonic Wars, William Makepeace Thackeray’s masterpiece has been adapted into a 7 part, lavish production with a star studded cast including Suranne Jones, Michael Palin, Martin Clunes and Frances de la Tour. Olivia Cooke plays the anti-heroine, Becky Sharp.

Becky is a poor orphan when she first makes friends with the lovely Amelia Sedley at Miss Pinkerton's Academy for Young Ladies. She may not have the natural advantages of her companion but she more than makes up for it with her wit, charm, deviousness and determination to make a success of herself whatever the cost.

If you prefer something a little more contemporary then the 10 episode adaptation of “The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair” based on the book by Joel Dicker might be right up your street. On Sky Witness, the first episode is scheduled for Tuesday 4 September at 9pm.

Set in coastal Maine, the book focuses on Marcus Goldman who is visiting Harry Quebert’s home to find a cure for his writer’s block. Marcus’ plans are suddenly upended when Harry is sensationally implicated in the cold-case murder of Nola Kellergan, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been missing for 33 years. In fact, Harry is the only suspect. Can Marcus solve the crime and save his friend?

Llyfrau Gwych ar y sgrin fach dros yr hydref

Ydych chi, fel fi, yn hoff o ddrama hanesyddol glasurol?  Wel, rwy’n gobeithio ein bod ni am gael amser da dros yr hydref wrth i “Vanity Fair” gyrraedd ein sgriniau ar ddydd Sul 2 Medi am 9pm ar ITV.

Wedi ei osod yn ystod y Rhyfeloedd Napoleonaidd, mae campwaith William Makepeace Thackeray wedi ei addasu’n gynhyrchiad ysblennydd 7 pennod gyda chast o actorion enwog sy’n cynnwys Suranne Jones, Michael Palin, Martin Clunes a Frances de la Tour. Olivia Cooke sy’n chwarae’r rhan yr wrtharwres, Becky Sharp.

Mae Becky’n ferch amddifad pan ddaw i adnabod yr hyfryd Amelia Sedley yn Miss Pinkerton's Academy for Young Ladies. Does ganddi ‘mo manteision naturiol ei chyfaill ond mae’n gwneud yn iawn am hynny gyda’i chrebwyll, ei chyfaredd, ei chyfrwystra a’i phenderfyniad i lwyddo beth bynnag fo’r gost.

Os oes well gennych chi rywbeth mwy cyfoes yna efallai bydd yr addasiad 10 pennod o “The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair”, sy’n seiliedig ar y llyfr gan Joel Dicker, yr union beth i chi. Ar Sky Witness, bydd y bennod gyntaf ar nos Fawrth, 4 Medi am 9pm.

Wedi ei leoli ym Maine, mae’r llyfr yn canolbwyntio ar Marcus Goldman sy’n ymweld â chartref Harry Quebert er mwyn ail-afael yn yr awen.  Mae cynlluniau Marcus yn cael eu hysgwyd pan fo Harry’n cael ei gysylltu â llofruddiaeth Nola Kellergan, merch bymtheg oed sydd wedi bod ar goll ers 33 o flynyddoedd.  Mewn gwirionedd, Harry yw’r unig un sy’n cael ei amau. All Marcus ddatrys y drosedd ac achub ei ffrind?

CWA - John Creasey New Blood Dagger Award

If you enjoy a good crime novel take a look at the new talent shortlisted for the CWA John Creasey New Blood Dagger Award. This award is for the best crime novel by a debut author first published in the UK.

William Boyle – Gravesend
Ray Boy Calabrese is released from prison 16 years after his actions led to the death of a young man. The victim's brother, Conway D'Innocenzio, a 29-year-old Brooklynite is stuck in the past and still howling for Ray Boy's blood. When the chips are down and the gun is drawn, Conway finds that he doesn't have murder in him. Now Ray Boy Calabrese is back in Gravesend. Some people worship him, some want him dead but none more so than the ex-con himself.

Joe Ide – I.Q.
East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, lost children unrecovered. Someone from the neighbourhood has taken it upon himself to help solve the cases the police can't or won't touch. They call him IQ. He's a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence. He charges his clients whatever they can afford. To get by, he's forced to take on clients that can pay. This time, it’s a rap mogul whose life is in danger.

Danya Kukafka – Girl in Snow
When high school student Lucinda Hayes is found murdered, no one in her sleepy Colorado suburb is untouched - not the boy who loved her too much; not the girl who wanted her perfect life; not the police officer assigned to investigate. In the aftermath of the tragedy, these three unforgettable characters, Cameron, Jade, and Russ, must each confront their darkest secrets in an effort to find solace, the truth, or both.

Melissa Scrivener Love – Lola
Lola stands next to Garcia while he mans the grill in their craggy square of backyard. The barbeque has just begun, and the women are clustered gossiping, while the men hold sweating beers. Lola prefers the periphery, she is not like the other women in Huntington Park.
Suddenly, a sharp knock on the front door, probably a cop. Lola goes to answer it. The man standing there is Mexican, not Mexican-American, like everybody else here. Lola searches his face for a bead of sweat but comes up empty. She has never met him, but she knows his name. Everyone in this neighbourhood knows his name. They call him The Collector, and he won’t give them long.

Khurrum Rahman – East of Hounslow
Jay is a dope dealer living in West London. He goes to the mosque on Friday, and he's just bought his pride and joy, a BMW. He lives with his mum, and life seems sweet. But his world is about to turn upside-down because MI5 have been watching him. They think he's just the man they need for a delicate mission. One thing's for sure, now he's a long way East of Hounslow, Jay's life will never be the same again

Emma Viskic – Resurrection Bay
This title is also shortlisted for The Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel, quite an achievement for a debut author. For a synopsis see last week’s post (17 August 2018).

William Boyle – Gravesend
Caiff Ray Boy Calabrese ei ryddhau o'r carchar 16 mlynedd ar ôl i'w weithredoedd arwain at farwolaeth dyn ifanc. Mae brawd y dioddefwr, Conway D'Innocenzio, gwr ifanc 29 oed o Brooklyn â'i wreiddiau yn y gorffennol ac mae'n dal i ddyheu am waed Ray Boy. Pan fydd pethau ar i lawr a'r gwn yn barod i'w danio, mae Conway yn canfod nad yw llofruddiaeth yn perthyn iddo. Bellach, mae Ray Boy Calabrese yn ôl yn Gravesend. Mae rhai pobl yn ei addoli, mae rhai ei eisiau'n farw ond neb mwy na'r cyn-droseddwr ei hun.

Joe Ide – I.Q.
Dwyrain y Traeth Hir. Prin yw'r Adran Heddlu LA yn cadw i fyny â'r gyfradd troseddau uchel. Mae llofruddiaethau heb eu datrys, plant coll heb eu canfod. Mae rhywun o'r gymdogaeth wedi ei gymryd ar ei hun i helpu i ddatrys yr achosion na all yr heddlu eu cyffwrdd neu'n dewis peidio â'u cyffwrdd. Maen nhw'n ei alw'n IQ. Mae'n well ganddo gwmni ei hun, ymadawodd ag addysg uwch, ei natur annymunol sy'n cuddio natur benderfynol a deallusrwydd ffyrnig. Mae ei gleientiaid yn talu beth bynnag y gallant ei fforddio. Er mwyn byw, mae'n gorfod cymryd cleientiaid sy'n gallu talu. Y tro hwn, un o wŷr pwysig y byd rap sydd mewn perygl.

Danya Kukafka – Girl in Snow
Pan ddarganfyddir bod Lucinda Hayes, myfyriwr ysgol uwchradd, wedi llofruddio, nid oes neb yn ei maestref gysglyd yn Colorado yn ddigyffwrdd - nid y bachgen a oedd yn ei charu'n ormodol; nid y ferch a oedd eisiau ei bywyd perffaith; nid swyddog yr heddlu a benodwyd i ymchwilio iddo. Yn dilyn y trychineb, mae'n rhaid i'r tri chymeriad bythgofiadwy, Cameron, Jade, a Russ, wynebu eu cyfrinachau tywyllaf mewn ymdrech i ddod o hyd i gysur, y gwir, neu'r ddau.

Melissa Scrivener Love – Lola
Mae Lola yn sefyll wrth ymyl Garcia tra ei fod yn gweithio'r gridyll yn eu tipyn o iard gefn garw. Mae'r barbeciw newydd danio ac mae'r menywod yn cloncian yn eu clystyrau, tra bod y dynion yn dal cwrw chwyslyd. Mae'n well gan Lola'r ymylon, nid yw hi fel y merched eraill ym Mharc Huntington.

Yn sydyn, mae yna gnoc llym ar y drws ffrynt, plismon yn ôl pob tebyg. Mae Lola yn mynd i'w ateb. Mae'r dyn sy'n sefyll yno yn Mecsicanwr, nid Mecsicanwr-Americanaidd, fel pawb arall yma. Mae Lola yn chwilio'i wyneb am ddiferyn o chwys, ond dim. Nid yw hi erioed wedi cwrdd ag ef, ond mae hi'n gwybod ei enw. Mae pawb yn y gymdogaeth hon yn gwybod ei enw. Maent yn ei alw'n 'Y Casglwr', ac nid yw'n rhoi amser hir iddynt.

Khurrum Rahman – East of Hounslow
Mae Jay yn werthwr cyffuriau sy'n byw yng Ngorllewin Llundain. Mae'n mynd i'r mosg ar ddydd Gwener, ac mae wedi prynu ei brif ddiléit, BMW. Mae'n byw gyda'i fam, ac mae bywyd yn ymddangos yn felys. Ond mae ei fyd ar fin troi wyneb i waered am fod MI5 wedi bod yn ei wylio. Maen nhw'n meddwl mai dyna'r union ddyn sydd ei angen arnynt ar gyfer tasg fach anodd. Un peth sy'n sicr, nawr ei fod yn ffordd bell i'r dwyrain o Hounslow, ni fydd bywyd Jay byth yr un fath eto

Emma Viskic – Resurrection Bay
Mae'r llyfr hwn hefyd ar y rhestr fer ar gyfer Gwobr Dagr Aur am y nofel troseddau gorau, tipyn o gyflawniad i awdur sy'n cychwyn arni. Am grynodeb, gweler yr erthygl a bostiwyd yr wythnos ddiwethaf (17 Awst 2018).

John Creasy New Blood Award)
Caleb Zelic, profoundly deaf since early childhood, has always lived on the outside - watching, picking up tell-tale signs people hide in a smile, a cough, a kiss. Caleb and his troubled friend Frankie, an ex-cop, start with one clue, Scott the last word the murder victim texted to Caleb. But Scott is always one step ahead.

Gwobrau Dagger Cymdeithas Awduron Troseddau 2018

Mae'r rhestr fer gwobrau Dagger CWA bellach ar agor. Mae yna 11 categori o wobrau, gan gynnwys talent newydd, straeon byrion a throseddau hanesyddol.

Yn y neges hon, byddwn yn edrych ar Wobr Aur Dagger a ddyfernir i nofel troseddau gorau'r flwyddyn. Dyma'r 6 teitl ar y rhestr fer:

Steve Cavanagh – The Liar
Pan fydd merch Leonard Howell, gŵr busnes cyfoethog yn cael ei herwgipio, mae'r heddlu'n camu i mewn ar unwaith. Ond mae Howell yn gwybod na fydd hyn yn dasg syml - mae angen rhywun arno sy'n barod i dorri'r rheolau. Yn dwyllwr heb ei ail ar un adeg ond bellach yn gyfreithiwr blaenllaw, mae Eddie Flynn, sy'n gwybod sut deimlad yw colli merch, yn oedi dim i achub merch Howell.

Mick Herron - London Rules (Hefyd ar restr fer Gwobr
Steel Dagger Ian Fleming)
Efallai nad yw 'Rheolau Llundain' wedi ei nodi ar bapur, ond mae pawb yn gwybod rheol un, gofalu am eich hun, fel y mae Claude Whelan gŵr blaenllaw Parc Regent, yn ei ddysgu, y ffordd anodd. Gyda'r dasg o ddiogelu prif weinidog sydd yng nghanol peryglon, mae'n wynebu ymosodiad o bob cyfeiriad ei hun, yn enwedig gan ei ddirprwy ei hun, Lady Di Taverner, sy'n gwybod bob tro y mae Claude yn baglu.

Dennis Lehane – Since We Fell
Mae Rachel Childs, cyn-newyddiadurwr, bellach yn byw fel meudwyes mewn gwirionedd ers y chwalodd ei nerfau yn fyw yn ystod darllediad. Ym mhob ffordd arall, fodd bynnag, mae hi'n mwynhau bywyd delfrydol gyda gŵr delfrydol. Hyd nes i gyfarfod ar hap ar brynhawn glawog beri diflastod i'r bywyd delfrydol hwnnw. Wedi'i thynnu i mewn i gynllwyn yn llawn twyll, trais, ac o bosibl, gwallgofrwydd, mae'n rhaid i Rachel ddod o hyd i'r cryfder i goncro ofnau annymunol a gwirioneddau sy'n newid meddwl.

Attica Locke - Bluebird, Bluebird (Hefyd ar restr fer Gwobr
Steel Dagger Ian Fleming)
Yn nhref fechan Lark, Texas, mae dau gorff yn cael eu golchi i fyny yn yr ystumllyn. Y cyntaf, cyfreithiwr du o Chicago ac yna, tri diwrnod yn ddiweddarach, gwraig wen leol, ac mae'n ysgogi nyth cacwn o chwerwder. Rhaid i Darren Matthews, marchfilwr, ddatrys y troseddau - ac achub ei hun yn y broses - cyn i gynnwrf hiliol sy'n mudlosgi ers tro, ffrwydro.

Abir Mukherjee - A Necessary Evil (Hefyd ar restr fer y
Wobr Hanesyddol)
India, 1920. Mae Capten Wyndham a Sergeant Banerjee o Heddlu Calcutta yn ymchwilio i farwolaeth ddramatig mab Maharajah. Wrth i Wyndham a Banerjee geisio datrys y dirgelwch y tu ôl i'r llofruddiaeth, maent yn mynd ynghlwm mewn byd peryglus lle mae'r rheini sydd mewn grym yn byw yn ôl eu rheolau eu hunain a'r rhai sy'n eu croesi yn talu gyda'u bywydau.

Emma Viskic - Resurrection Bay (Hefyd ar restr fer Gwobr
Gwaed Newydd John Creasy)
Mae Caleb Zelic, sy’n hollol fyddar ers ei fod yn blentyn, wastad wedi byw ar y tu allan - gwylio, codi arwyddion arwyddocaol y mae pobl yn eu cuddio mewn gwên, pesychiad neu gusan. Pan fydd cyfaill o’i blentyndod yn cael ei lofruddio, mae euogrwydd a natur benderfynol i brofi ei ddiniweidrwydd ei hun yn anfon Caleb i hela’r llofrudd. Ond ni all wneud ar ei ben ei hun. Mae Caleb a’i gyfaill cythryblus Frankie, cyn-blismon, yn dechrau gydag un cliw, Scott y gair olaf a anfonwyd gan y dioddefwr drwy neges destun at Caleb. Ond mae  Scott un cam ymlaen bob tro.

Bydd yr enillwyr yn cael eu cyhoeddi ar 25 Hydref 2018.
