Wednesday 13th September was Roald Dahl Day, a yearly event
to celebrate the popular author’s month of birth. Dahl was a screenwriter and
fighter pilot as well as a novelist, short story writer and poet. His books
have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide.
Why not revisit a Dahl Classic this month (in English or
Welsh) or try some authors whose books demonstrate that the Dahl magic is alive
and well.
If you’re feeling creative, why not visit the official
Roald Dahl website and try out one of eleven ways to celebrate Roald Dahl day!
Esio Trot – Mr Hoppy really loves his neighbour Mrs Silver,
and Mrs Silver really loves her tortoise, Alfie. One day Mrs Silver asks Mr
Hoppy how to make Alfie grow, and suddenly Mr Hoppy knows the way to win her
heart. With the help of a magical spell and some cabbage leaves, can Mr Hoppy
be happy at last?
Matilda - Matilda's parents have called her some terrible
things, but the truth is she's a genius and they're the stupid ones.
Underestimating Matilda proves to be a big mistake as they, along with her
spiteful headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, soon find out when Matilda discovers
she has a very special power.
Billy and the Minpins (re-released this month with
illustrations by Quentin Blake) - Billy's mum says he must never go out through
the garden gate and explore the dark forest beyond. So, one day, that's exactly
what he does! There he meets the Minpins, tiny tree-dwelling people whose
children are the size of matchsticks. They live in fear of the terrible,
galloping GRUNCHER. Will it gobble Billy too - or can he find a way to defeat
the hungry beast?
Grandpa’s Great Escape (by David Walliams) - Jack’s Grandpa
wears his slippers to the supermarket, serves up Spam à la Custard for dinner
and often doesn’t remember Jack’s name.
But he can still take to the skies in a speeding Spitfire and save the
day! This book takes readers on an
incredible journey over London and great escapes through the city in a high
octane adventure full of comedy and heart.
AniMalcolm (by David Baddiel) - From David Baddiel, the
brightest new star of children’s books and winner of the LOLLIES award, comes a
laugh-out-loud adventure for every child who ever wondered what it might be
like to be a bit of an animal. It might
make you think differently. And speak differently. And eat differently. And,
smell differently! But will you end up the same as before? Because sometimes the hardest thing to become is… yourself.
Diwrnod Roald Dahl oedd dydd Mercher 13eg Medi, digwyddiad
blynyddol i ddathlu mis geni’r awdur poblogaidd. Roed Dahl yn sgriptiwr
ffilmiau ac yn beilot-ymladdwr yn ogystal â bod yn nofelydd, awdur straeon
byrion a bardd.
yn dangos bod lledrith Dahl yn fyw ac yn iach?
Os ydych chi’n teimlo’n greadigol, pam na ewch chi i wefan
swyddogol Roald Dahl i weld yr un ar ddeg o ffyrdd i ddathlu diwrnod Roald
Dahl!
Nab Wrc – Mae Mr Hoppy’n caru ei gymydog Mrs Silver, ac
mae Mrs Silver yn caru ei chrwban, Alfie. Un diwrnod mae Mrs Silver yn gofyn i Mr
Hoppy sut i wneud i Alfie dyfu, ac yn sydyn mae Mr Hoppy gwybod y ffordd at ei
chalon. Gyda thipyn o hyd a lledrith a dail bresych, a all Mr Hoppy fod yn
hapus o’r diwedd?
Matilda - Mae rhieni Matilda wedi galw rhai pethau ofnadwy
arni hi, ond y gwir yw, hi yw’r athrylith a nhw yw’r rhai twp. Mae meddwl yn rhy fach am Matilda’n
gamgymeriad mawr, fel y maen nhw, a’i phrifathrawes filain, Miss Trunchbull, y
dod i ddeall pan fo Matilda’n dysgu bod ganddi rym arbennig iawn.
Billy and the Minpins (ail-gyhoeddwyd y mis yma gyda
lluniau gan Quentin Blake) - Mae mam Billy’n dweud wrtho nad yw e byth i fynd
allan trwy glwyd yr ardd ac i’r goedwig dywyll y tu hwnt. Felly, un diwrnod,
dyna’n union y mae’n gwneud! Yno, mae’n cwrdd â’r Minpins, pobl bach sy’n byw
yn y coed y mae eu plant yr un faint â matsis. Maen nhw’n byw mewn ofn y
GRUNCHER ofnadwy. A fydd y Gruncher yn bwyta Billy hefyd – neu a oes modd iddo
gael hyd i ffordd i faeddu’r bwystfil barus?
Grandpa’s Great Escape (gan David Walliams) – Mae tad-cu Jack
yn gwisgo’i slipers i’r siop, yn rhoi Spam â Chwstard i ginio ac yn aml dyw e
ddim yn cofio enw Jack. Ond mae’n dal i
allu hedfan mewn Spitfire ac achub y dydd!
Mae’r llyfr hyn yn mynd â darllenwyr ar daith anhygoel dros Lundain a
diangfeydd gwych trwy’r ddinas mewn antur llawn comedi a chalon.
AniMalcolm (gan David Baddiel) - Gan David Baddiel, seren
newydd llyfrau i blant ac enillydd gwobr LOLLIES, daw antur ddoniol i bob
plentyn sydd wedi meddwl sut beth fyddai bod yn rhyw fath o anifail. Efallai y byddech chi’n meddwl yn wahanol. Yn
siarad yn wahanol. Yn bwyta’n wahanol. Ac, arogli’n wahanol! Ond a fyddwch
chi’n diweddu’r un ffordd ac o’r blaen? Oherwydd, ambell
waith, y peth caletaf yw bod yn......chi’ch hun.
