British Book Awards - Children's Book of the Year

Last week we looked at books shortlisted for ‘Debut Book of the Year’ at The 2018 British Book Awards.

Winners across all categories were announced earlier this month but this week we’re focusing on some of the nominations for Children’s Book of the Year.

The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris - Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children.
They disappeared so quietly that at first almost no one noticed - until one day, they were gone.
But there is an old kind of magic for finding what is missing, and for summoning what has vanished. If the right spells are spoken, the lost words might return...

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo - We need some new fairy tale endings: What if the princess didn't marry Prince Charming but instead went on to be an astronaut? What if the jealous step sisters were supportive and kind? And what if the queen was the one really in charge of the kingdom?
Vibrantly illustrated and truly inspirational, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls tells the stories of 100 heroic women from Elizabeth I to Serena Williams.

La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One by Philip Pullman - Eleven-year-old Malcolm Polstead and his dæmon, Asta, live with his parents at the Trout Inn near Oxford. Across the River Thames (which Malcolm navigates often using his beloved canoe, a boat by the name of La Belle Sauvage) is the Godstow Priory where the nuns live. Malcolm learns they have a guest with them; a baby by the name of Lyra Belacqua...

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas - Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.

Oi Cat! by Kes Gray  - According to Frog, cats sit on gnats, dogs sit on logs, raccoons sit on macaroons, armadillos sit on pillows and chicks sit on bricks…
But wait! Cat doesn't like sitting on gnats, they keep biting his bottom!
Will Frog and Dog help him change the rules?

Yr wythnos ddiwethaf, edrychwyd ar y llyfrau ar restr fer 'Llyfrau Newydd y Flwyddyn' yng Ngwobrau Llyfrau Prydain 2018.

Cyhoeddwyd enwau enillwyr ar draws pob categori yn gynharach y mis hwn ond yr wythnos hon rydym yn canolbwyntio ar rai o'r enwebiadau ar gyfer Llyfr y Flwyddyn i Blant.

The Lost Words gan Robert Macfarlane a Jackie Morris - Un tro, fe ddechreuodd geiriau ddiflannu o iaith plant.
Gwnaethant hynny mor dawel nad oedd neb wedi sylwi ar y dechrau - tan un diwrnod, roeddent wedi diflannu’n llwyr.
Ond mae ‘na hen fath o hud i ddarganfod pethau coll, ac i alw nôl yr hyn sydd wedi diflannu. Os yw’r hud cywir yn cael ei defnyddio, mae’n bosib y daw’r geiriau coll yn ôl...

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls gan Elena Favilli a Francesca Cavallo - Mae arnom angen ambell i ddiweddglo newydd arnom ar gyfer storïau tylwyth teg: Beth fyddai'n digwydd pe na fyddai'r dywysoges yn priodi'r Tywysog, ond yn hytrach mynd ymlaen i fod yn ofodwr? Beth pe byddai'r llyschwiorydd cenfigennus yn gefnogol ac yn garedig? A'r frenhines oedd yr unig un sy'n gyfrifol am y deyrnas?
Gyda darluniau bywiog ac yn hollol ysbrydoledig, mae Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls yn adrodd storïau 100 o fenywod arwrol o Elizabeth I i Serena Williams.

La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One gan Philip Pullman - Mae Malcolm Polstead, un ar ddeg oed, a’i ddemon, Asta, yn byw gyda’i rieni yn nhafarn y Trout Inn ger Rhydychen. Ar draws yr afon Tafwys (y mae Malcolm yn teithio ar ei hyd yn aml, yn ei hoff ganŵ, cwch o’r enw Belle Sauvage) y mae Priordy Godstow, lle mae’r lleianod yn byw. Mae Malcolm yn darganfod fod ganddynt westai; baban o’r enw Lyra Belacqua...

The Hate U Give gan Angie Thomas - Mae Starr, un ar bymtheg oed, yn byw mewn dau fyd: y gymdogaeth dlawd lle cafodd ei geni a’i magu a’i hysgol goeth yn y faestref. Mae’r cydbwysedd anesmwyth rhyngddynt yn cael ei chwalu pan oedd Starr yn dyst, a’r unig dyst, pan gafodd Khalil, ei ffrind gorau, ei saethu’n farw, a hwnnw’n ddi-arf, gan aelod o’r heddlu. Nawr, gallai’r hyn y mae Starr yn ei ddweud, ddifetha’i chymuned. Ac fe allai hithau hefyd gael ei lladd.
Oi Cat! gan Kes Gray  - Yn ôl Broga ... Mae cathod yn eistedd ar wybed, mae cŵn yn eistedd ar foncyffion, mae racwniaid yn eistedd ar facarŵns, mae armadillos yn eistedd ar glustogau a chywion yn eistedd ar frics ...
Ond arhoswch!
Nid yw’r gath yn hoffi eistedd ar wybed, maen nhw’n brathu ei ben ôl!
A fydd Broga a Ci yn ei helpu i newid y rheolau?
