If, like me you
are saddened by the demise of high-street retail in general and in particular
the struggle for survival of our wonderful independent book shops then spare a
thought for them this week, Independent Bookshop Week. Unfortunately here in
Torfaen we are not well served by bookshops. A quick search of the website
revealed that if you live in the north of the borough “Bookish” in Crickhowell
is your nearest indie bookshop 6.3 miles from Blaenavon and 11.6 miles from
Pontypool. While if you are based in Cwmbran, Cardiff offers a selection, the
nearest being 12.6 miles and if you don’t mind traveling a little further “The Chepstow
Bookshop” is under 15 miles away. All are great places for a day out so why not
pay them a visit?

It may seem
strange, libraries championing book shops but I don’t see them as rivals but
rather as allies in the quest to promote reading and provide great books for
all ages.
In the run up
to the week the IBW Book Award winners were announced. Winner of the
adult category was Amor Towles for “A Gentleman in Moscow. The children’s
category winner was Geraldine McCaughrean for “Where the World Ends” and the picture
book category went to author Nicola Davies and illustrator Emily Sutton for "Lots:The Diversity of Life on Earth". For
more information on these books and the shortlisted titles visit the website.

wefan gallwch weld mai “Bookish” yng Nghrughywel yw eich siop lyfrau annibynnol

ac 11.6 milltir o Bont-y-pŵl. Os ydych chi yng Nghwmbrân, mae Caerdydd yn
cynnig dewis, arc mae’r agosaf yn 12.6 milltir i ffwrdd ac os nad oes ots

Efallai bod hyn i weld yn od – bod llyfrgelloedd yn
hyrwyddo siopau llyfrau, ond dydw i ddim yn meddwl amdanyn nhw fel cystadleuwyr
ond yn hytrach fel cyfeillion wrth geisio hybu darllen a darparu llyfrau da i
bobl o bob oed.
Yn ystod yr wythnos cyhoeddwyd enillwyr Gwobrau Llyfrau
Siopau Llyfrau Annibynnol. Enillydd categori’r oedolion oedd Amor Towles am “A
Gentleman in Moscow”. Enillydd categori’r plant oedd Geraldine McCaughrean am
“Where the World Ends” ac aeth gwobr y llyfr lluniau i’r awdur Nicola Davies a’r
